Two months ago, myself and my business partner started the process of creating a new company, at this point in time we were somewhat anxious and overwhelmed as to where to start, apart from the business name that actually was created and suggested by Mike as well, we liked the name and have run with it. Once our initial meeting was complete, we were very clear as to exactly what and when needed to be done, step by step, and in logical order. Basically we provided the information and ideas of what we had in mind for the business and Mike and his Team pulled it altogether.

Mike further added considerable value to our new Company in its start up phase by preparing on our behalf an in depth detailed three (3) year business plan, extensive financial projections along with compiling contracts, letters of intent and source documents to support the plan. Start up funding which was critical to our business commencing operations was no longer a major obstacle with one of the big four banks, CBD based Business Banker commenting “we have extensively conducted our due diligence and were impressed”. Substantial funding as detailed within our business plan was fully approved within three business days. This made the whole process from start to finish incredibly enjoyable as apposed to a very stressful process.

There are number of key accounting, tax, insurance and financial considerations as a Barrister.  I knew that I was good at what I do, but I had no idea where to start when it came to financial planning and accounting systems that would allow me to continue to grow in my profession.  I did know that it was a sound investment to utilise the services of the best accountant that I could find, as well as someone I could trust with all aspects of my business.  Fortunately for me, I knew Mike who had assisted me (and my clients) when I was a solicitor.

Mike is a real asset.  He assisted me in a way that made sense and was fundamental to my business success.  Mike and his team assisted me with:- GST registrations, preparation and lodgement of quarterly business activity statements (BAS), income tax planning and income tax returns.

One important issue that Mike identified very early on, was that in a barrister’s first year of business, a lack of budgeting for income tax payments causes real issues later on. Mike highlighted as a sole trader, the net profit from services will be taxed at my personal income tax marginal tax rate, but the income tax on the business profit in the first year will only be paid to the ATO upon lodgement of your personal tax return – which can be up to 23 months after I commenced business. The ATO then require all of the income tax to be paid in a lump sum payment. While this may be a scary thought for some, Mike highlighted how important it is to budget and put money aside for the tax as you are earning the income so as to suffer no financial strain in the future. Mike further highlighted business deductions and how important it is to ensure that I was claiming as many eligible deductions as possible.  In fact, Mike made it a point to scrutinise my business records and ensure that my returns were 100% accurate.

Mike has also assisted me to maintain correct taxation records, creating and maintaining a logbook for my vehicle, familiarised himself with Bar Books and kept my ATO lodgements up to date (and more importantly on time).

I have retained Mike as not only my accountant and tax agent, but also as my external CFO. I have no hesitation recommending his services to business, individuals and fellow legal practitioners at any level.
